Most will have riffles, spaced evenly along the length of the sluice, usually every few inches, perpendicular to the length of the sluice. Riffles cause small barriers to the water flow which creates eddies in the water, giving the heavier material (black sand and gold) a chance to drop to the bottom, behind the riffles.

All most all sluice boxes use a carpet or some form of ribbed matting or miners moss as the first trap in the sluice box. The second trap may be expanded metal or a riffle system that goes over the top of the first trap and some might go expanded metal over the first trap with a riffle system over the expanded metal giving the sluice box 3 traps to stop and hold the gold.

I got an AMP fluid bed sluice at the Stockton gold show, I am still on the fence, its lightweight, compact, gets the gold but its finnicky, needs lots of water and slow to feed. I have a big sluice that used to be a dredge, converted to a highbanker that I am turning back into a dredge. I also have couple rocker boxes I made out of wood.

Jun 29, 2013· The water flow is the key to these things working properly, we have piled rocks at the top to help channel more flow properly... We had two and used one at the base of the other to check if it was loosing anything and no, nothing in the second sluice. At the right drop they catch all fine gold. You have just got to take care when lifting them out.

Riffles versus expanded metal for sluice-box?: I plan on classifying my material down to at least 1/4" so would expanded metal work as well as small riffles or should I use both? The area will also more than likely be heavy with black sands so I ...

Here's a video done by my brother on the AU Grabber during the summer of 2013 while he was on the Bering Sea Gold Show. What is notable here, (the gold of course) is that the gold doesn't migrate in the Gold Well sluice. And until a pocket is nearly full of gold, you really don't see it.

Since the majority of the available gold in the world is micro fine and ultrafine gold in the 30 micron (.0011 inch) range, you want a sluice that can collect that gold and keep it from running out the end. The Gold Well Vortex Drop Riffle Sluice works by creating a gentle, vertically oriented vortex. This vortex keeps material in the spiral ...

Nov 03, 2011· In a sluice box these man made crevices, or riffles as they called in a sluice, trap the gold so it can be recovered by the prospector. Building a sluice box: Building a sluice box is something that gold miners have done for many years. In the early days sluice boxes were built bigger and bigger as gold mining methods became more aggressive.

Riffles are purposeful obstructions which slow the movement of gold in the sluice so it can be trapped in miner's moss, carpeting, or rubber matting in the bottom of the sluice. Nineteenth century gold miners used wooden sluices that were at least 12 feet long, but modern gold prospectors primarily use sluice boxes made of plastic or metal ...

This week I went and asked "how to SIZE a sluice box" to the crew on a large gold prospector forum and other sluice or gravity gold recovery 'experts' and gathered the list of emails and forum posts here below. As you will see, in summary, most can optimize or troubleshoot a sluice box but few or none can size a gold sluice box.

Much like a tradition riffle. The awesome thing about the Riverhog riffle is that it can be trimmed to YOUR needed height, and to either a cut or throw angle. (Explained in the video) You can use it in ANY sluice as long as you match the water depth with the riffle height, but it's great for the top of dredges where water is rough as well.

Apr 13, 2013· The extra long sluice let the blond sand clear out and retained the gold, there was some rubber matting also at the head of the sluice and under some of the carpet. Sluice Box . The other great advantage is with the riffle design. Because plastic can be injection molded it has been able to achieve a drop riffle design that reduces turbulence to a minimum allowing even the finest gold to settle in the riffle grooves without being washed through the sluice box.

Sluice boxes process material best when receiving it from a steady feed. Too much material dumped at once into a sluice box has a tendency to overload the riffles and choke off the concentrating-action behind the riffles. This will cause gold to wash right through the sluice box as if there were no riffles .
